Tyrannosauroidea was a Superfamily of bipedal theropods that appeared sometime in the Middle Jurassic and died out During the K-T Extinction at the end of the Cretaceous. This clade includes the family Tyrannosauridae and some other their more basal relatives. Members of the family can be characterized by their skull and pelvic bones.

Classifications

In 1964, the Superfamily name Tyrannosauroidea was published in a paper. The term "Tyrannosauroidea" is understood to be used to group Tyrannosaurids and their direct ancestors. To define the Superfamily, theropods that are most closely related to Tyrannosaurus verses Ornithomimus, Deinonychus, Allosaurus, or Troodon. It is also defined as a taxon of theropods sharing a more recent common ancestor with Tyrannosaurus than neornithean birds.
