Shastasauridae was a family of ichthyosaurus that included the largest marine reptiles of all times. These icthyosaurs lived during the Triassic Period and had many charecteristics that later ichthyosaurs lacked. Shastasaurids ranged in size from the 6 meter Besanosaurus to the 21 meter Shastasaurus. These were the apex predators of the Triassic seas, replaced in the Jurassic by pliosaurs such asLiopleurodon and Pliosaurus .
