Pliosaurs or Pliosauroidea was a suborder of short-necked plesiosaurs fromJurassic and Cretaceous Period. They were not dinosaurs, but instead were large marine reptiles. These carnivores ranged from 4-15 meters in length. When the giant ichthyosaurs of the Triassic, such as Shastasaurus and Shonisaurus, became extinct, pliosaurs became the top predators where as ichthyosaurs took the backseat. Pliosaurs ruled the seas preying on fish, squid, and other marine reptiles (plesiosaurs, ichthyosaurs, etc.) until the Mosasaurs evolved to take the crown.

Classification:[edit | edit source]
